The Secret Life of Cryptobiotic Soil

Directions:

  • Heat ½ cup water just until it boils then remove from heat.
  • Sprinkle in 3 envelopes of gelatin and let it soften a few minutes, then stir with a fork.
  • Add enough corn syrup to make 1 cup of thick glop.
  • Stir again with the fork, lifting out the long strands of gunk.
  • If it thickens too much, add more water.

Step 2: Cryptobiotic soil mixture

  • In a large bowl or bucket combine 2 cups of sand with 1 cup of sphagnum moss and mix it up.
  • In a smaller bowl combine 1 cup of fake snot mixture with ¼ cup of green algae. (If you have it)
  • Slowly pour the fake snot mixture into the sand and moss, stirring as you go.

Step 3: Create a landscape

  • Place your cryptobiotic soil on ½ of the cookie sheet. You can shape it to look like the photos of cryptobiotic soil if you like.
  • Pour the rest of the sand onto the other ½ cookie sheet. This you can shape like a dune, or whatever you want.
