Iron Chemistry
Step 1: Examine the results of iron chemistry in rocks
I. Colors of Rocks.
The Navajo Sandstone is a rock formation of towering cliff faces exposed throughout much of the Colorado Plateau. Its beauty is largely due to brilliant and varying colors of red, orange, pink, yellow, white, and hues in between.

Many of these colors are created by pigments made of iron. Not iron in its reduced and fluid form, but oxidized iron as a solid pigment painting the rock itself.
