Geographic Regions of GSENM

The Monument is divided into three geographic sections:

  • Grand Staircase, to the west, is a land of terraces and open benches that stair-step up from south to north.
  • Kaiparowits Plateau, in the center, is a region of high plateaus and predominantly Cretaceous age rocks.
  • Escalante Canyons, to the east, are an area of deeply eroded, incised canyons.
